GUIDE TO PROTECTING YOUR VEHICLE DURING STORM SEASON

Each year, as the storm season approaches, concerns go beyond road safety to the risk of damage to our vehicles – the essential companions of our daily lives. Just one heavy downpour, a deeply flooded road, or a sudden strong gust of wind can cause serious issues for your car.

To help customers stay proactive in prevention, protection, and maintaining vehicle longevity, ISUZU Vietnam presents the Guide to Protecting Your Vehicle During Storm Season, structured into three essential stages:

I. Before the storm – Prepare thoroughly to minimize risks

Thoughtful preparation is the most effective “shield” to reduce potential damage:

– Choose a safe parking spot: Park in elevated, dry areas with sturdy shelters. Avoid low-lying zones, areas near large trees, power poles, or temporary structures vulnerable to strong winds.

– Check safety systems: Ensure windshield wipers work smoothly, all lights (headlights, indicators, fog lights) are bright and functional, and brakes and tires are in good condition. These are vital assistants when driving in harsh weather.

– Pay attention to the engine & electrical system: Check engine oil, belts, battery, electrical circuits, and transmission to ensure the vehicle is always in a ready state.

– Prepare essential items: Flashlight, tow cables, warning devices, wheel chocks, and roadside assistance numbers – these can become “lifesavers” in emergency situations.

II. During the storm – Drive safely and respond appropriately

Whenever possible, avoid traveling during a storm. If driving is absolutely necessary, please keep in mind:

– Assess water depth: Do not proceed if water levels exceed half the wheel height. If you must drive through a flooded area, keep the vehicle in a low gear, maintain steady throttle, move slowly, and avoid sudden braking.

– Maintain a safe distance: Keep away from the water turbulence caused by other vehicles and reduce the risk of abrupt stops.

– Turn off non-essential electrical loads: Such as the air conditioner or entertainment system, to reduce the burden on the vehicle’s electrical system.

– If your vehicle stalls: To avoid hydrolock—one of the most serious damages that can result in extremely costly repairs—never attempt to restart the engine. Instead, follow these steps:

+ Remove the key from the ignition.

+ Disconnect the negative terminal (-) of the battery. When doing so, cover the positive terminal (+) with a dry cloth to prevent short circuits.

+ Call the rescue hotline immediately and have your vehicle towed to the nearest ISUZU dealers for a thorough inspection.

III. After the storm – Inspect carefully to prevent hidden damage

Even if your vehicle appears to function normally after a storm, a comprehensive inspection is essential:

– Exterior cleaning: Wash away mud and debris from the underbody, wheel arches, and crevices to prevent corrosion.

– Engine & electrical system check: Replace engine oil if water contamination is detected (milky or foamy oil), replace damp air filters, and inspect the battery and fuses.

– Interior treatment: Dry seats, carpets, and floor mats to prevent mold. Check the air conditioning and ventilation systems to stop bacteria growth.

– Visit an ISUZU dealers: With specialized equipment and experienced technicians, your vehicle will undergo a complete inspection to ensure absolute safety before returning to the road.

Don’t forget to save the rescue hotline and contact your nearest ISUZU dealers whenever assistance is needed.
